History of the Mathias Ridenour Chapter, NSDAR

Mathias Ridenour Head Stone.jpg

The chapter was founded on Thursday, October 12, 1978, at the home of Mrs. LaRoux Mentz in Gahanna, Ohio. The founding date coincides with the eighty-eighth anniversary of the NSDAR, October 11, 1890. Our chapter was named after Mathias Ridenour who was the first permanent settler of the Gahanna area, following the Revolutionary War.

Mathias Ridenour Chapter, NSDAR is a medium-sized chapter with members of all age groups. Our chapter members are daughters, nieces, students, professionals, mothers, aunts, grandmothers, and retirees.

Each year we honor our namesake with a wreath-laying ceremony in May. We also attend the wreath-laying ceremony and the military salute that honors the veterans at the Seceder Cemetery. The chapter also participates in local parades.

We support and promote the objectives of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution: God, Home, and Country.

Why the Mathias Ridenour Name?

Mathias Ridenour's family migrated to the United States from France, where he was born. The extended Ridenour family supported the American Revolution through signing the Oath of Fidelity and Support, oath of allegiance, fighting or organizing militia, etc. while in Maryland.  Mathias and his immediate family migrated to Pennsylvania for a short time and migrated once again to what is now Gahanna, Ohio. Both Mathias and his wife Catharine are buried in Gahanna, Ohio.
